What IS A PARACHUTE?

The Dictionary defines par·a·chute as

1. An apparatus used to retard free fall from an aircraft, consisting of a light,
usually hemispherical canopy attached by cords to a harness and worn or
stored folded until deployed in descent.

2. Rescue equipment consisting of a device that fills with air and retards your fall.

In Racing it's used to slow down the race vehicle. When fully deployed the
parachute catches the air behind the vehicle causing a drag that helps slow
down the race vehicle to a complete and safe stop.
